On the Front Burner:
Our Most Current Concerns
✤ Character Deficiency Syndrome
Apply insights from Solomon and the other Wisdom writers of the Bible to understand why we make self-destructive choices, and how to escape the cycle. Based on Garry D. Nation’s book Fool: Identifying and Overcoming Character Deficiency Syndrome.
✤Dealing with the New World Disorder
The first world conflict of the 21st Century is essentially religious in nature. How should Christians respond to it? We deal with a number of urgent questions under three comprehensive headings:
Part I: The Shattering Event: How did the terrorist attack on 9/11 permanently affect the course of modern history?
Part II: The War behind the War: Beyond politics, what is the real reason why the West seems unable to unite against the threat of radical Islamism? What is the nature of the materialistic worldview now emerging to replace Post-Modernism?
Part III: A Strategic Christian Response: What is the twofold basis of a strategic response to world movements? What is the true definition of tolerance.
The Christian Mind and Worldview
✤ 7 Men Who Still Rule from the Grave
This is a uniquely human and personal approach to understanding how ideas have consequences. It deals not only with what are the abstract ideas that dominate our time, but also the personalities who generated them and the effects those ideas have had in the past 100 years. This seminar is Dr. Nation’s own presentation inspired by the book Seven Men Who Rule the World from the Grave by Dave Breese.
✤10 Convictions of a Christian Mind
Can a Christian learn to think from the Bible’s frame of reference--and yet not become a fanatic? Everything we’ve learned in our culture has led us to think un-theistically (dare we say atheistically?) There are many ways to communicate the Christian worldview. This is one that we think makes sense to the non-scholar. We present 10 reasonable propositions, derived from the Word of God and reflected in the 10 Commandments, as the ground for all rational thinking.
✤Beyond Liberal and Conservative: Biblical Morality and the Foundations of Human Government
Is there a Christian philosophy of politics, and if so, is it right wing or left? Our position is that biblical morality transcends human politics, but that it should nevertheless make a powerful impact in this world through people of faith. We discuss the nature of power; the two distinct and unmixable types of power; the strengths and weaknesses of the two fundamental political philosophies; the biblical inspiration behind the need for a balance of power; and the principles of civil government (not just theocracy, either) found in the 10 Commandments.
Bible, Theology, and Spirituality
✤ Essentials of Worship
What are the essential elements of worship that can be derived from Scripture by which we may order our practices and judge our experiences, regardless of our culture and traditions? How may we put an understanding of these essentials into practice, and escape the bondage of our preferences and prejudices?
✤Waiting: The Essential Spiritual Discipline
What must we do to increase our faith and strengthen our relationship with God? There is much discussion of spiritual disciplines today as people feel the need for greater depth in their relationship with God. Most overlook the one spiritual discipline that is the most essential, and also the most demanding. This study focuses on biblical passages that explain what it means to wait, why it is necessary, and how we can pass the test.
✤The Lord’s Prayer, the Disciple’s Life
The teaching of Jesus called “the Lord’s Prayer” provides vital teaching not only on prayer but on the kind of life that his disciples should live. Is it too much to say that if all one knows about the Christian life is the Lord’s Prayer, it is enough to live it rightly and well? Maybe not.
✤Biblical Book Studies: A Sampler
•David: Hero, Outlaw, King
•Nehemiah: A Profile in Leadership
•Isaiah: The Worldview of God
•Mark: To Be a Disciple
•Acts: Defending the Faith - Was Luke-Acts a legal brief for Paul’s defense before Nero?
•Galatians: Manifesto of Freedom
•Philippians: Manifesto of Joy
✤Turning Points in Christian History: Great Events, Great Issues, Great Personalities
Everyone ought to know the story of their family, and every Christian ought to know the story of his family of faith. It’s not necessary to be a church historian to have knowledge of who are the heroes and anti-heroes of Christianity, and what are the great events and issues on which everything has turned to bring us to this day.
✤Serious Christianity: A Primer in Doctrine, Lifestyle, and Spirituality
We approach the Christian life and faith as a triad, consistent with our theology of Trinitarian Theism. It is one life, one faith, but it is lived out simultaneously in three dimensions of reality. It is experienced in the here and now, but by a power that comes to us from an age that is still to come.
